At a recent ‘Destination Tripura - Investment Summit’ Piyush Goyal, India’s Commerce and Industry minister, spoke about the investment made in the region by four major leading tire companies in the country, represented by Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA). The tire companies will together contribute Rs 1,000 crore ($131.8 million) for the development of rubber plantations spread over 200,000 hectares in the seven states of North Eastern India, over five years. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Rubber Board and ATMA on March 1, 2021, following which, on May 20, 2021, participating tire companies together transferred Rs 120 million ($1.5 million) to the account set up by the country’s Rubber Board. Funds provided by the tire companies are being used to procure planting materials. At the Summit, Mr. Goyal remarked that India’s North-East can emerge as a hub for rubber production and called upon the state to be the first off the block and take advantage as the early harvester to expand rubber plantations. Mr. Goyal noted that the cross-border Agartala-Akhaura (Bangladesh) rail project worth Rs 972 crore ($128.2 million) will help promote exports.
