ARPM RELEASES UPDATED OS-18 ENVIRONMENTAL EXCLUSION TEST PROCEDURES 

The Association for Rubber Products Manufacturers (ARPM) released its newly updated OS-18 Environmental Exclusion Test Procedures for Radial Shaft Seals. The purpose of the OS-18 publication is to present standard engineering laboratory test procedures for evaluating the contamination exclusion capability of radial shaft seals in various types of environments. This manual is a guide for dry and wet testing in applications with environments having moderate to severe contaminants present. Specific problems should be discussed with the radial lip seal manufacturer. This document was updated through the collective consensus of the members of the ARPM Dynamic Seal Committee, and are intended for referee use only. This publication was reviewed and approved by the member representatives of the ARPM’s Sealing Products Dynamic Technical Committee. The ARPM would like to acknowledge the following member companies for their contributions in the development of this publication: 3M Advanced Materials Division, AGC Chemicals Americas, Amsted Seals and Forming, Consolidated Metco Inc, Fiat Chrysler, Fluid Sealing Science, LLC, Ford Motor Company, Ford Transmission Driveline Eng, Freudenberg-NOK Sealing Technologies, Grace Technology and Development, SKF Sealing Solutions, The Chemours Company LLC, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Americas, Zeon Chemicals L.P. and Wacker Chemical. Keeping with ISO standards, all ARPM technical standards are reviewed every five years to establish if a revision is required to keep it current and relevant for the marketplace. The revised OS-18 OS-18 Environmental Exclusion Test Procedures for Radial Shaft Seals and over 100 technical standards are free for ARPM members, or available for purchase on the ARPM website at arpminc.com.

In the rubber mixing process, especially for internal mixers like a 110-liter volume mixer, the recommended fill ratio typically falls within the range of: Fill Ratio: 65% to 85%The fill factor or fill ratio is typically calculated as: Fill Ratio (%) = (Batch Weight / Mixer Chamber Volume) × (Specific Gravity of Compound) × 100 Example: Mixer Volume = 110 liters Target Fill Ratio = 75% Specific Gravity of Rubber Compound = ~1.2 So: Batch Weight = (110 × 0.75) / 1.2 ≈ 68.75 kg This means around 68–72 kg would be an optimal batch weight for a typical compound with SG ~1.2 in a 110 L mixer.
